Can a little orange tabby really affect someone’s life, awaken awareness, and be the fundraising catalyst to save the lives of countless companion animals? Woody was a stray cat that moved into our home in August 2001.
Little did this creature know that these humans were not the least bit interested in animals. Our youngest son Matt was so unfamiliar with cats and dogs that he put gloves on just to pet this little fur ball. My wife Carol refused him entry into the house. But, he wouldn’t go away. It wasn’t long, and this little animal captured our hearts becoming an important part of our family. We all have touching, funny, and sad stories about our animal companions. Woody gave us an endless number of those moments. But, his greatest gift was making us aware of the world of companion animals and the many people that care deeply for the well being of these companions.
A trip to your local animal rescue will introduce you to people and animals sharing common ground. Humans that identify these companions as loving spirits that ask little yet give so much. People that walk away from a Thanksgiving dinner to aid a friends sick dog. It is the thousands of volunteers that give their time, money, and love to help little souls that have been abandoned. A neighbor who spends her money on surgeries for a cat she found by the side of the road.
Woody passed away in January, 2011. His passing was extremely sad and is with us yet today. But Woody’s life made us aware of the millions of other animals that need our help. His being introduced us to people who do so much with so little. Woody’s Walk is not a memorial to a cat, Woody’s Walk is a memorial to all of our animal companions who have profoundly touched our lives.
